T’is The Season To Be Jolly

There are 21 Christmas Carols and Christmas Chart No1’s and Number 2’s and radio Christmas favourites in this write up --- how many can you find? (answers here)

With alarming haste, the festive season has crept up on Peterborough U3A again, and in the bleak midwinter we took our first step into Christmas at The Fleet again for the PU3A Christmas Bash. We think there were more at the event than last Christmas, and we understand that some members were driving home for Christmas specially to attend. There was certainly no need for anyone to say they were lonely this Christmas.

Nobody had troubled themselves to deck the hall with boughs of holly, but it was strung out on fairy lights, and the hall was beginning to look a lot like Christmas – especially at the appearance of our Belly Dancers in Christmas attire – one gentleman was even heard to do his best Lesley Phillips impression with the comment “Ding Dong ------- Merrily on High”. Yet again they brought joy to the world.

Once the Belly Dancers vacated the stage, we were treated to some original poems from our Poetry Writing group reading their prose. They came up with a Winter’s tale or two.

As we approached the break for teas and a mince pie the gathered throng were asked to call out “I believe in Father Christmas” to encourage the appearance of Saucy Santa to run the Christmas quiz, because we all know it’s only when you believe in him will he show his face. Mind you at our age you would think we knew It’s only make-believe.

Saucy Santa had a bit of a problem with the screen display, and asked Mary can we fix it, which she did, and Santa called out Hallelujah. He then went on with his rather saucy jokes to try and raise a titter. Our Belly Dancer with the raucous laugh was more restrained than last Christmas.

For Santa’s Christmas Quiz one table managed a magnificent 14 out of 16 – so well done to them.

Mince pies and a cuppa followed, giving everyone a chance to chat, and our finale was the Sing Something Simple group giving us a few Christmas songs that were perfect for the gathering to have a sing along. We thank them for giving us all the spirit of Christmas to depart with

It’s great that some of our groups are prepared to perform especially for you.

Only you guys in PU3A make our annual Christmas Bash such a success, it would be impossible without you all. We try to strike a balance between celebrating the time of year without too much of the commercialisation that seems to accompany the festive season now – so come next year let’s have another party.

Merry Xmas everybody
