Map Reading

Map reading for beginners

The first course of the year has now finished but I will look to run another after the summer hoilday period. If you are interested in attending a future course then please contact me and I will put you on the waiting list.

I have prepared a number of sessions to provide those of you who are unsure of or indeed for those who have little or no idea of how to use a map and compass but have a desire to do so.

For many the use of a map and compass is a dark art. However, by working systematically through this programme you will at the end be able to use a map and compass with confidence either on local walks, high in the Lakeland hills or on an orienteering course. No more will you have to follow the leader of a walk or be unable to find your way back to your car in thick mist when out on the mountains.

The course will consist of nine two hour sessions. Each two hour session will consist partly of indoor ‘class room’ work and the remainder outside with practical work. Not only will you be confident with Ordnance Survey maps but you’ll also have the skills to use an orienteering map. Indeed, the last two sessions will see us out on an orienteering course in Fineshades and Wakerley Great Woods.

Map reading and using a compass is for everyone and over the time of this course you’ll soon get to grips with it and you’ll never look at a map in the same way again.

You’ll be learning in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere having some fun and also getting some exercise whilst on the practical parts of the course. Oh, and there is always time for tea and cake along the way!

I am limited to numbers as I want to give as much close tuition as I can, so I will start with five U3A members initially. If more come forward I will start a waiting list. Hopefully I can run a number of these courses through the year and onwards if the demand is there.

You will need to come with your own compass. I would recommend a silva compass as per the attached link.

Note: you may be able to get a U3A discount at some shops
