Wednesday 25th July - Elton to Houghton - Well, here are the drivers ready and waiting for their navigators!
25th July 2018 a cross country run from Elton Walled Garden Café, Elton, Peterborough to Houghton Mill.
With many thanks to Chas and Doreen for planning and organising this Run and the special bonus of a Guided Tour around the Mill at Houghton. After refreshments in the Mulberry Cafe Elton, armed with our driving instructions, we set off at two minute intervals. And with not too many wrong turns we enjoyed a leisurely drive through the country lanes, avoiding the major road and arriving in Houghton in time for light refreshments before our Tour. We had a fascinating insight to the workings of the mill, learning about its history, it being the largest on the Great Ouse and its importance in the 1850s. Steve, the Miller, explained how the wheat was ground with the Victorian machinery to produce flour which was transported to the London bakeries. Of the five sets of original grindstones one is now run by electricity providing wholemeal flour for purchase today and one can still be driven by water power but only when water levels are adequate!! For the rest of the day there was opportunity enjoy the surrounding area.
U3A John Clare Classic Car Run - Wednesday 23rd May 2018
First of all …… Many Thanks to Graham Nunn and Mary for organising this Run. As Graham said we all came back smiling and we agreed we did enjoy ourselves with only one or two wrong turns!! We met for Lunch at the Milton Golf Club where we also had time to share our news with each other and preview the driving instructions. Then setting off around 1.30pm, just as the sun was coming out, our route wound through country lanes following instructions and references to John Clare’s poems. We covered 44 miles leisurely and arrived back at the Golf Club for tea and scones/cakes around 4.30pm

Wednesday 20th December 2017 a Christmas Lunch in Elton preceeded by a short Run
Unfortunately Anne and I were unable to attend but as group member Chas comments......It was a pleasant 33 mile drive starting at Elton Walled Garden through Elton village to Haddon and on towards Norman Cross. From here we crossed over the A1M to Folksworth, Great Gidding, Winwick and Thurning then towards Hemington where great views over the Nene Valley could be seen. On to Luddington and Warmington where we crossed the busy A605 to Fotheringhay and finally, we headed back to Elton for the finish. When we all had returned we sat down for our Christmas meal, where we all seemed to put the world right! Thanks was delivered to Graham & Carole for organising the event and also for the staff at Elton Walled Garden Restaurant
28th November 2017 - Twelve of us enjoyed a day out at Donington Park Museum; including in our number were both avid followers of racing circuits and those who just had a general interest of racing cars (classic and modern).
There were several Collections, each in housed in a different room of the Museum. It was great to see BRM (Bourne) represented adding local interest for us. Photos in the Gallery section of the PU3A web page.
It was all well set out and very informative and really worth the visit. Although we could not actually see the Track from the Museum we could hear the racing!
At lunchtime we were entertained by a film crew recording for the One Show - 'Sons of famous people' - A Birthday cake was brought out for Freddie son of motorcycle world champion Barry Sheene talking to commentator Steve Parrish (former motorcycle and truck racer) We were told that this little documentary would be televised in a week or so. We were only onlookers but some of us were prepared just in case the camera caught us in the background!
25th October some members met for coffee and/or lunch at the Elton Walled Garden Centre Tea Rooms. Idea were discussed for 2018. As a group we have been made very welcome at this Centre
27th September 2017 - I hope those who attended the 'Fun Run' on Wednesday really enjoyed themselves. The reports I have received so far do indicate that it was a great success!
On behalf of you all I would like to thank Roy and Jenny very much for all their preparation and organisation for this event especially as I was unable to attend.
They even arranged the weather to suit!!
There are also some photos of this 'Run' and the 3 Counties Run (May 2017) in the Gallery section of the PU3A web page.

U3A Classic and Kit Car Group
The Three Counties Run 31st May 2017
From Elton Garden Centre, classic car enthusiasts in 11 vehicles set out for a Run which had been planned and organised by two of our members Graham and Carol.
The sun shone as we wound our way through 28 miles of beautiful English countryside. Following our Route Directions we arrived at the Chequered Flag in Rockingham in time for Lunch…No one lost so far!!
Picking up our Return Journey Route, once again with Odometers set to zero, we were off….. Still keeping to quiet country lanes through Northamptonshire, Leicestershire & Rutland and even after a short delay while one of the roads reopened after road repairs, we get back for afternoon tea and cake in Elton.
Invited guests also enjoying this event with the U3A Classic Car Group were members of the local Morgan Owners’ Club.
Our thanks once again go to Graham and Carol for all their preparation beforehand making this, our first rally, such a success.
