Belly dance is a low to medium impact activity. It is based on traditional Arabic dance - Raks Sharki - and exercises the whole body with sinuous fluid movements, contrasted with stronger moves such as shimmies or hip drops. The moves which are attuned to the female body help us celebrate femininity and enjoy our bodies, whatever shape they are. Belly dancing is suitable for all ages.
Traditionally dancing is in bare feet but the floor can be cold in Winter and many of us wear simple flat shoes such as jazz shoes or ballet pumps. Stocking feet are not suitable due to the risk of slipping, nor are trainers, which impede flexibility. You may wear a T shirt with trousers, leggings or a full skirt. Some ladies have bought jangly hip scarves, easily available on the internet.
We learn choreographed dances to lively music, sometimes using traditional props such as veils and sticks. We are a friendly, fun-loving group who appreciate that dancing not only tones and exercises the body but lifts the spirits too.
I am a fully qualified Belly Dance Instructor whose aim is to bring the joy of dance and its benefits to any ladies who wish to try it, including those with disabilities or chronic conditions. Just phone or email me to find out if it would be suitable for you.
